Korean Culture Festival at 97 SU Sofia

Our team took part in the Korean Culture Festival at 97 SU Sofia

With great enthusiasm, our team participated in the Korean Culture Festival, which was held at 97 SU “Bratya Miladinovi” in Sofia. Our volunteer Yoanna, who has been studying Korean language and culture for several years, offered traditional Korean board games and competitions dedicated to the popular K-pop culture, which make getting to know Korea fun and interesting.

Here is what Yoanna shared about her love for Korean culture:

“Hello! My name is Yoanna and I am a first-year student majoring in South, East and Southeast Asia at Sofia University. I have a huge love for Asia and I love traveling, studying and volunteering, because these things inspire me.

Why Korean? I started learning Korean out of pure curiosity. I was interested in their Hangul alphabet and wanted to learn to read. Later, I started learning new and new words until I finally found myself with a bunch of textbooks and aids, motivated to learn this language.

My love for Korean culture was unlocked immediately after I started learning Korean in private lessons. My teacher seemed to awaken something in me that had always been in me, but I never knew it. Her stories about life there, about the people and the culture touched me immensely and made me fall in love with this country, precisely because it is very different from the Bulgarian one. Every time I went to lessons, I thought about what to ask her and sometimes I stayed after class for hours to tell me about Korea.

However, what impressed me the most was their respect for their past. And precisely how, despite modernization, they still preserve and protect their traditions, habits, mentality and attitude towards the world around them.”

Our team’s participation in the Korean Culture Festival was a great opportunity to touch this interesting and multifaceted culture. We thank Yonna for her initiative and enthusiasm, as well as everyone who took part in the various workshops. The festival was honored by a representative of the South Korean Embassy, who handed out a bunch of gifts and awards.
