Disinformation that defames women: results and analysis from the focus groups under the G-LENS project
The G-LENS project, in which the Open Space Foundation also participates, aims to research and counter disinformation that defames women. As part of the project, we conducted a series of focus groups that helped us collect valuable information about the problem in Bulgaria.
The focus groups included representatives of institutions, think tanks and NGOs active in the field of analysis and counteraction to disinformation in Bulgaria, journalists, incl. fact-checkers and young people. A total of 23 people participated in the focus groups. Topics discussed included examples of disinformation in Bulgaria, the channels where it manifests itself, target groups, existing legislation, initiatives and good practices.
Key findings:
- Dissemination: Social medias are a main channel for the dissemination of disinformation that aims to defame women. However, they are also found in advertisements, sports channels and from the parliamentary rostrum.
- Content: The most common forms include sexist comments, slander, hate speech, manipulated photos and videos, as well as political manipulation.
- Impact: Disinformation can have serious psychological consequences for women, such as low self-esteem, anxiety and fear, and generally limiting women’s political and social participation, while increased online and offline violence leads to polarization in society.
- Reaction: Participants in the groups stressed the need for more education and awareness about the problem, as well as more effective mechanisms for reporting and removing disinformation.
Conclusion:
The results of the focus groups show that disinformation that denigrates women is a serious problem that requires a comprehensive approach. It is important to raise public awareness, develop effective strategies to combat disinformation and support victims.
